Watkins smashes Devon to first win
Devon v Lancashire, Sunday 20th June, Sidmouth CC

Watkins smashes personal best as Devon crush Lancashire by 158 runs at the Fortfield. After having been asked to bat first by visitors Lancashire on a pitch that had good even bounce and in the end hardly any lateral deviation, Kiwi skipper Aimee Watkins made the red rose pay with a stunning display of power hitting as she hit 188 from 130 balls, which included 27 fours and 2 sixes. In a very peculiar looking batting card only two other players made double figures, Amara Carr made 11 and shared in a 3rd wicket partnership of 87 and Claire Ramsay made 14 in a 78 run 6th wicket partnership. Both were happy to play second fiddle to an astonishing display as Watkins made Lancashire pay a heavy price for dropping her in the twenties. Carr was unlucky to be out stumped as she missed a full toss which rebounded off the keepers pads and rolled back onto the stumps when she looked in no trouble at all. Lancashire to their credit kept going in the field with spinners Alex Hartley and Jenny Laycock returning respectable figures given the circumstances of 2-46 and 1-41 respectively from their ten overs. Natalie Brown was also impressive with the new ball and finished with 0-38 from her ten. Hayley Martinus looked lively early on and removed both openers, Richards caught behind and Bowden caught at gully before Watkins got into her and hit her out of the attack. Some soft dismissals in the middle of the innings when really all the Devon girls had to do was stay with Watkins. The majority were probably guilty of trying to play too square of the wicket on a pitch that wasn’t spinning nor was their any swing on a baking hot day. The innings closed as Devon were bowled out for 269 in the 49th over.

Lancashire’s reply never really got going as Devon were able to re-unite their promising new ball attack of Rebecca Donohue and Jodie Dibble. Both bowled with good pace as they accounted for the top four, all clean bowled, indeed of the ten wickets taken six were bowled. Only Jess Scothern with a patient 39 showed any resistance as Rebecca Bertrand picked up two wickets, whilst there was one apiece for Hannah Singleton, Nicole Richards and Jessica Rippen, Donohue being the pick with 3-24 as Lancashire were bowled out for 111 to go down by 158 runs as Devon re-ignited their County season.
